A modest old house on Old Ranch Road 12, painted in red and black stripes and opened as a coffee house in May 2008. A playful haunted house with plants everywhere.
Wake The Dead was built to be a neighborhood living room: a spot where professors, retirees, students, parents, musicians and artists end up at the next table over, sharing ideas over strong coffee and good food.
The stage room opened a year after the coffee bar. Shows, open mics and markets have filled the calendar ever since, and in 2018 the house was voted the best coffee shop in San Marcos by Texas State students and faculty.

A quieter room off the main bar with outlets along the walls. Students take it over at finals; professors have brought whole classes.

A landscaped patio under big shade trees and a pergola, with string lights at night. Dogs are welcome out here.

A small black-box room with a stage, purple walls and string lights. Bands, comedy, poetry and drag shows — about forty people fit.

Local artists hang new work every month, and most pieces are for sale — ask at the counter. Hand-made jewelry, gifts, shirts and stickers fill the shelves by the fireplace.
